Food and Wine

Fertile soil and the maritime climate make this region an ideal place to grow things we eat and drink. These environmental factors combined with the relaxed, easygoing nature of the region make it less pretentious and earthier than other 'foodie' destinations in Victoria and Australia.

The Geelong wine region boasts a winning combination of rich terroir and cool climate, similar to the renowned French wine regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy. The region consistently produces high-quality wine, with more than 13 Geelong wines featured in James Halliday's 'Australian Wine Companion 2012 - Best of the Best List'.

There are diversities within the greater region, spread from the maritime microclimate of The Bellarine and Surf Coast to the dark volcanic topsoils and dry, sandy outcrops of the Moorabool Valley. These sub-regional nuances add an intriguing, multi-faceted complexity to Geelong wines.

The wine is terrific, but it's only part of the story in this region. Some specialty produce has long been established in the region, but some newer food product is beginning to make waves in the region.

Bounded on three sides by water, fresh seafood has always been a feature of the region. Recently this amazing product has become even more accessible with the emergence of local fisheries, provedores and fishermens cooperatives selling direct to the public. Portarlington mussels and Apollo Bay crayfish have long-standing reputations among the local food and restaurant crowd.

The rolling hills of the hinterland, volcanic plains and lush peninsula soil are growing all sorts of delicious treats. There are olive groves producing some of Victoria's best fruit and oil, berry farms where the family can roll up their sleeves and pick their own - the taste of fruit freshly picked by your own hand is incomparable.

Other foods are emerging too - cheese, hydroponic vegetables, eggs and other meat products are being grown locally and, in many cases, featured on the menus of local eateries.

Clyde Park Vineyard & Bistro

Clyde Park Vineyard & Bistro has a cellar door and bistro set on the beautiful Moorabool Valley just off the Midland Highway half an hour north of Geelong, 35 minutes from of Ballarat. The speciality is the wines, in particular, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. The food, lovingly cooked by the chef and owner Sue include a wonderful array of wood fired pizza, anti Pasto tasting plates, salt and pepper calamari. Areas within the region have varying microclimates influencing the depth of colour, bouquet and flavour of the wines. The Bellarine has a maritime climate with bay breeezes and spectacular views, whilst the hills and valleys of the Moorabool Valley – Anakie areas have a warm, continental style climate. The renowned Surf Coast is famous for its long summer days and cooling ocean breezes. James Halliday in his Wine Atlas of Australia and New Zealand wrote: "If there is a unifying feature in all of the Geelong wines, it is their strength and depth of colour, bouquet and flavour." Moorabool Valley Wine Region

The Moorabool Valley is one of Australia’s finest and most awarded cool climate wine regions. Bannockburn is the gateway to the Moorabool Valley Wine Region and is located less than an hours drive from Melbourne and 20 minutes from Geelong. Boutique wineries producing hand crafted wines are forging an international reputation for the Moorabool Valley. The Moorabool Valley is a sub region of Victoria's highly regarded Geelong Wine Region. Wineries in the Moorabool Valley region include Austins Wines, Bannockburn Vineyard, Clyde Park Vineyard and Lethbridge Wines.

Golden Plains Farmers Market

The award winning Golden Plains Farmers’ Market is authentic and accredited, held in the heart of Bannockburn just 20 minutes from Geelong. Held on the first Saturday, every month, every season, from 9am to 1pm—you can start at the farmers’ market then spend the day touring Golden Plains.

Rolling Pin Pies and Cakes Ocean Grove

Rolling Pin Pies and Cakes Ocean Grove and Queenscliff was officially judged Australia's Best Pie Maker 2013, taking the 'humble meat pie' to new heights. Walk in to either Rolling Pin Pies and Cakes Ocean Grove or Queenscliff bakeries and you will be greeted by an exciting selection of gourmet pies baked to golden perfection, mouth-watering cakes and slices, and a huge range of sandwiches, rolls, wraps, toasted Turkish breads and great coffee. The famous local bakery has appeared twice on Channel Nine's Today Show and recently featured in the Herald Sun's 'Victoria's Top 100 Food Experiences'. You are spoilt for choice with over 15 different flavoured pies, including jumbo chunky beef (judged Australia's Best Pie), country lamb and rosemary, and their famous breakfast pie (judged Australia's Best Brekkie Pie). Try one of their meat and vegetable, vegetarian wholemeal or Bombay pasties, all of which placed first in their respective categories at the Great Aussie Pastie Competition. If you have a sweet tooth you will be treated to an array of guilty pleasures. Try the Lemon Meringue Pie or their famous Beesting. Brown Magpie Wines is a family owned winery and vineyard in Modewarre, which is situated in the Surf Coast hinterland in the Geelong wine region. The gently sloping estate overlooks the picturesque view of Mount Moriac. Its small sheltered, nine hectare vineyard is ideally positioned to grow aromatic cool climate grape varieties. Taking no short cuts and selecting only the best fruit, the grapes are hand-picked and processed within hours of harvesting. Brown Magpie Wines believe in the traditional art of winemaking. Advance Mussel Supply is a family owned and operated business that has been farming Mussels in Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, for over 30 years. They are one of the original Mussel farmers in Port Phillip Bay and one of the largest. They have multiple growing sites at Clifton Springs and Grassy point aquaculture zones. Advance Mussel Supply has been a pioneer in developing new growing techniques and building purpose built equipment and boats. Their goal is to produce high quality mussels all year round.
