Queenscliff Bike Hire

Queenscliff Bike Hire is located at Queenscliff Harbour in Victoria, Australia, approximately an hour and 30 minutes drive from Melbourne. Bike hire is available for adults and kids. As well as optional trailer bikes and buggies for younger kids and toddlers. The bikes are brand new and are regularly maintained by their on site mechanic. Queenscliff bike hire can supply bikes for individuals or large groups and will deliver to the entire Bellarine area including Queenscliff, Point Lonsdale, Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads. Discounts apply for long term hire, schools and groups of more than 10 people. You can hire a bike for half a day, full day or even a week. There are plenty of fantastic places to ride. If you are in town for a short time, take a ride along the beach path which winds its way along Point Londsdale foreshore to the Point Lonsdale Lighthouse. This is an easy eight kilometre round trip. WEDNESDAY 27 MARCH - SUNDAY 7 APRIL The Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach is celebrating its 52nd Anniversary this year and once again the world’s best male and female surfers are in town to compete for professional surfing’s most treasured trophy – the Rip Curl Pro Bell. The event holds a very special place in surfing folklore, as the longest running world championship level contest on the World Tour. The Rip Curl Pro field is made up of the Top 34 ranked male surfers in the world plus two 'wildcard' invitees; the Rip Curl Women’s Pro is made up of the Top 17 ranked female surfers in the world plus one wildcard. Among them include: 2012 Rip Curl Pro Champion and World Champion surfer Mick Fanning 2010 Rip Curl Pro Champion and 10 times World Champion Kelly Slater 5 time World Champion and 2010 Rip Curl Pro Champion Steph Gilmore 2009 & 2011 Rip Curl Pro Champion Joel Parkinson 2011 & 2012 Rip Curl Pro Champion Sally Fitzgibbons The total prize money on offer is $425,000 for the men’s competition and $120,000 for the women. IT’S OFFICIAL! Opera in the Otways is back for its fifth year with a programme that will delight opera lovers and new-comers, starring Jonathon Welch and Deborah Cheetham. Jonathon Welch, a household name thanks to his inspirational leadership of the multi award-winning Choir of Hard Knocks, has prepared a program of great popular operatic arias, duets and ensembles by Verdi, Puccini and Mozart from La Traviata, La Bohème, La Rondine and The Marriage of Figaro. The program will feature operatic tenor Jonathon Welch and soprano Deborah Cheetham performing popular songs and ensembles from three of the greatest music theatre and operetta composers in Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story, George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess and Lehar’s Merry Widow. Bells Beach

With an international reputation as one of Australia’s best surf beaches, Bells Beach is amazing spot – either in the water or out. There isn’t much ‘beach’ at Bells, it’s mostly a glorious cliff-face, and views from the cliff-top car park are spectacular – a great spot to watch local surfers out in the water. There are several quality surfing spots in the precinct from Southside to Steps Reef. Every Easter Bells Beach hosts the international professional surfing community for the Rip Curl Pro event. To get to Bells Beach, travel along the Great Ocean Road past Jan Juc – turn left into Bells Boulevard and follow the signs. General Beach Hazard Rating: 6 Least hazardous: 1-3 Moderately hazardous: 4-6 Highly hazardous: 7-8 Extremely hazardous: 9-10 Hazard rating refers to physical beach and surf conditions ONLY and does not include potentially dangerous marine life. SURFING Bells is a world class right when above 1.5 m. When smaller, the waves break close in to the headland and produce a right called Rincon. Further around the head are two more reef breaks which work below 2 m, called Centre Side (a right) and Southside (a left). FISHING The water is deep right off the beach, while at low tide you can fish from the reefs at each end. GENERAL One of the meccas of surfing and well worth a visit, if only to view the beach and surf from the bluffs. Torquay Shopping

As birth place and headquarters for some of the biggest surf brands in Australia, Torquay is a destination for shopping. The main highway into town has shops and plazas, including the large Surf City Plaza, on either side of the road. Every name in surfwear and adventure sports apparel is featured in the precinct. Many of the brands also have factory outlets nearby. As a vibrant and modern seaside destination, Torquay has a number of other shopping precincts. Gilbert Street is considered the centre of town, with supermarkets, bakeries, post office and banks as well as specialty retail and eateries. Torquay Central is a plaza development housing some of Australia’s best known retailers alongside coffee shops and places to eat. Bell Street has a collection of shops, cafes and restaurants as well as the local pub. Some tour operators and learn to surf schools operate from offices in Bell Street.

It is one of the most popular falls in the Otways and easily accessible. A five-minute walk from the car park brings you to a lookout of the falls, cascading 30 metres into a beautiful tree fern gullyYou also can take steps down to the Erskine River to view the falls from below. . Straw Falls are a 15m cascade on the Erskine River and are a further 400m downstreams of Erskine Falls. Experienced walkers can follow the river from Erksine Falls to Lorne. The 7.5km one-way walk takes about three hours and passes Straw Falls and Splitter Falls. It should not be attempted when water levels are high.

The Otway Harvest Trail is a celebration of the seasons that bestow their rich bounty on a luscious part of Victoria. Spring is a time of plenty and promise. As the winter gives way to warm sunny days, see the bright patchwork of yellow canola fields appear, the farmers out mowing their grass and baling their hay and the spring lambs frolicking on a frosty morning. The first berries appear. Green shoots can be seen in the vineyards as the vines burst their buds and flowers and spring vegetables appear at farm gate stalls. New release wines can be found at cellar doors. Summer is all about being outdoors. All the berry farms have opened and their sweet juicy berries are ripe for the picking. The lush emerald green of the vineyards become more distinctive as the land around slowly turns a golden brown. People clamour for outdoor tables and chairs at cafés and restaurants to soak in the warm days, mild evenings and glorious pastel sunsets. Local wines and beers go so well with the seafood, vegetables and fruits in plentiful supply. Wine lovers are welcomed at cellar doors and their curiosity is rewarded with the discovery of new wines. Autumn is a time of harvest. The days become still and warm, and the crisp cool nights are perfect for sleeping. With the winter rains not far away, the wineries are busy harvesting their fruit and the vignerons hands become garnet red as they nurture the new wines through their ferment. It is also time to harvest the olives from their groves before the first frosts of winter arrive. Smell the fruity aroma of the extra virgin olive oil as it flows from the presses. The last of the berries are picked. Winter is a time for taking stock of the seasons passed and making ready for the farming year ahead. The farmers plough their fields and sow their winter crops. Vineyards, olive groves and orchards are pruned and readied for a new season. Fences are mended. The days shorten and become colder. Cattle turn their backs to the wind. Dams pent over the summer begin to refill. Root vegetables appear at the farm gate stands. It’s a time for reflection and for savouring the joys of recently harvested produce. Lengthy conversations occur over bottles of wine in front of toasty log fires. Eventually the tell tale signs of another Spring begin to appear.

Glow worms in the Otways

The Otways has worms. Glorious little glow worms can be found at sites throughout the Otway National Park after dark. They are generally found in dark, damp places - like soil banks with overhanging ledges, along creek embankments and beside walking tracks. The worms are not actually worms, rather they are the larvae of fly-like insects called fungus gnats. The larvae prey on small insects - as such they produce sticky threads. The glow emitted from their abdomen attracts insects who are then trapped in the sticky threads. Glow worms are shy creatures - torches, loud noises or touching them may disturb the glow worms and case them to 'switch off' their light and retreat into a crack. Glow worms are often found at Melba Gully, and near the Grey River Picnic Area at Kennett River. It's a good idea to take a torch to find your way along the tracks after dark, but avoid shining the light directly at the glow worms.

Otways Wine & Food Lovers Trail

This trail traverses some of the most fertile land in Victoria which grows some of the state’s best produce. Breakfast can be enjoyed anywhere between Apollo Bay and Lorne before turning left into the Otways hinterland. The Deans Marsh and Pennyroyal area is renowned for its berries, olives and wineries. Further North, Birregurra is the hub of Otway produce and the perfect lunch stop. Heading back towards the Great Ocean Road via Forrest, which has a boutique brewery and an atmospheric cafe. Continue South through towering rainforest to Apollo Bay. Brochures for the Otway Harvest Trail, which details the growers and producers in this hinterland region, are available at local visitor information centres.

Queenscliff Heritage Walk

Stroll the beautiful Heritage town of Queenscliff and enjoy afternoon tea at one of Queenscliff’s grand old buildings to finish. Guided walks run 2.00pm every Saturday and take approximately one and a quarter hours. Group walks available at other times by appointment. This short self guided walk will take approximately 45 minutes and take you past a few of the town’s historic buildings.

Popular with families for its shipwreck playground, BBQ facilities and picnic areas, Coogarah Park set on the riverbank just a couple of minutes from the centre of town provides the children with hours of entertainment. There are also walking tracks and a skate park in the grounds.

A series of flowing channels connected by bike paths and bridges make Anglesea River a popular destination for activities such as fishing from one of the many platforms, canoeing, windsurfing, sailing or hiring a paddle boat. The river and its surroundings is also an important habitat for native wildlife including owls, possums, echidnas, kangaroo and wallabies, as well as native fish, eels and many species of waterbird.

Eastern Beach

The art-deco swimming enclosure at Eastern Beach has been a Geelong favourite for generations. Built in the 1930’s, the ‘Promenade’ is a wooden structure built in an arc, great for walking on a warm evening. The swimming area also has a large tower and diving boards. There is a separate children’s pool that is enclosed and paved. On shore, there is a fantastic adventure playground with plenty of spectator seats for the grown ups. There are large areas of lawn perfect for picnics or, depending on the season, a kick of the football or a game of cricket. There are toilet and dressing room facilities, and the beach is patrolled by lifesavers during summer. There is also a restaurant / café / kiosk on site. The whole area is set amongst grassy hills and enormous trees, and several of the buildings in the precinct are listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.

ex HMAS Canberra

The ex HMAS Canberra dive site is the first artificial reef specifically created for diving in Victoria. It lies in approximately 28 metres of water, with the top of the mast about 5 metres below the surface at low tide. The site provides opportunities for divers with varying levels of experience and certification, from open water level certificates to advanced wreck divers, to enjoy this site. When the ship as prepared for scuttling many of the original working features were retained so divers still get a sense of being on board a working ship. Dive charter operators based at Queenscliff Harbour can lead trips to dive the ex HMAS Canberra.

Freedom Bay Cruises

Families, visitors and locals can enjoy a relaxing cruise around Corio Bay on board Freedom Bay Cruises. Freedom is a 14.5 metre catamaran with upper and lower decks and viewing areas on the bow and stern. There are options to be outside or under cover. The one hour cruise is a great introduction to Geelong's award winning waterfront and history. During the cruise you will see yachts under sail and ship movements in the port. Dolphins and jellyfish are a highlight for everyone and the kids can have their photo taken in the captain's chair at the helm. A commentary and slide show enhances the cruise experience. Cruises depart from Steampacket Quay, near Cunningham Pier, Geelong at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. Tickets can be purchased at the boat. Cruises operate on weekends from September to May and bookings are recommended on the day. A licensed bar and kiosk is open during the cruise to purchase drinks, chips and souvenirs. Access to the vessel is via a gangway and four steps and there is ample seating for up to 60 passengers. The cruise is suitable for all ages with room for prams and wheelie frames. The Blues Train

Victoria's historic coastal town of Queenscliff is home to the world's one and only Blues Train. It is a unique experience that combines four of Australia's best live acts and the beautiful scenery of the Bellarine Peninsula on the Drysdale Railway line while aboard a real moving vintage steam train. It is one of Australia's most spectacular entertainment experiences - it is a mini festival in one night and a progressive party you'll never forget. Nothing captures the spirit of the blues quite like a steam train. Listening to the train whistle and the clickety-clack on the tracks you can imagine the old blues masters jamming it up on Mississippi freight trains as they were 'ridin' the blinds' around America's deep south. The Blues Train leaves Queenscliff Railway Station after guests have enjoyed a delicious meal complemented by fine Australian and local wines. The steam train then makes its way along 16 kilometres of track, gently rocking from side to side, seemingly in beat with the music. At each of the stops, Suma Park and Drysdale, revellers swap carriages to see another of the acts, so by the end of the night patrons have seen all four acts performing on the train. Drinks are available from the mobile bar that miraculously appears on each platform (from the converted guard's van). You can sit back, relax and listen to the music with a drinking on one of the seated carriages or get up and boogie the blues away in one of the dance carriages. National Wool Museum

The National Wool Museum is housed in a beautifully restored 1872 bluestone wool store close to the vibrant new Waterfront Geelong. The Museum is Australia's largest comprehensive museum of wool, showcasing the region's wool story - from the sheep's back to the clothes rack, and from the birth of the industry in the 1840's to its place in the world today. Central to the Museum experience is the 1910 built Axminster Jacquard carpet loom. Daily demonstrations by the Museum's skilled carpet weavers show how the loom works, and at the same time produce the Museum's own "Manor House Rug", available for purchase through the Museum Shop. The Museum has two permanent galleries telling the Australian story of wool. The first, "The Wool Harvest", looks at sheep farming and wool production. Exploring the pastoral aspect of wool in Australia, visitors can follow the path of the fleece through shearing, classing, wool pressing and dispatch. A recreated shearing shed and a film about shearing demonstrate what life in the shearing industry was like. Shearing demonstrations can be arranged for group bookings. Gallery Two, "From Fleece to Fabric", looks at the processing of wool into fabric and offers an insight into the people and processes involved in the textile industry. A sequential display of the machinery actually used in the process demonstrates the transformation of fleece to fabric. The Museum also has an exciting annual calendar of temporary exhibitions and events. On the Ground Floor, the Museum Shop stocks a wide range of woollen products and unique local crafts while Black Sheep Cafe & Restaurant offers great food, wines, coffee and cakes. Camilo Olives

Camilo Olive Grove is located near Teesdale between the grassy woodland of the Inverleigh Flora and Fauna Reserve and the Leigh River, among rolling hills in South West Victoria. Founded by Joan and Peter McGovern in 2002, Camilo was the result of an extensive search for a location that would provide a great climate, position and soil for growing premium quality olives, and a property that would give them much pleasure. The Leigh River winds its way through a valley at the edge of the property providing a home to beautiful and very old river gums and blackwood trees as well as an abundance of Australian wildlife including kangaroos, koalas, platypus, wedge-tailed eagles, parrots and possums. Camilo's olives are planted on flat plains between the reserve and the river valley. Also the Yarra Valley where you will see views of the 141 wineries, Dandenong Ranges and Port Phillip Bay! You begin the day with a briefing with your tandem sky dive instructor. This includes what to expect and what you will see on the plane flight to height, in freefall, under canopy and upon landing. You will walk out to the plane and there you will conduct your practice exits. Once all the ground preparation has been completed, it is time to get in the plane and get ready for take-off! Once you reach height, it will be time to prepare you for the jump. The door opens and as you leave the plane, you and your tandem master will accelerate through the air reaching terminal velocity of 220 kilometres per hour. Freefall feels like riding a cushion of air similar to riding a big wave. In freefall, your senses will be able to take in stunning views as far as the eye can see. Then finally it's time to pull your parachute open. From the loud rushing of air that you hear all around you, the parachute ride is very different as you sail around the sky, gliding. The landing is easy, just lift your legs. The parachute will glide and you will eventually put your feet down to land. This location provides a great springboard to explore the Otways and surrounding attractions, and they are happy to share some local knowledge of other places to see and visit. The only distractions will come from the Crimson Rosellas and Blue Winged Grass Parrots that have made the vineyard their home. Birregurra Estate Olives began in 1999, when the perfect paddock was found on Birregurra's rich soils in Victoria's western district. Once the land was secured, planting began and the dream became real. Four and a half thousand olive trees have since been planted. Most of them are Kalamata and they have been producing a continually increasing crop of delicious olives ever since. The olives are pickled on the property in a purpose built kitchen. Traditional recipes are used to process all the varieties of olives including, Kalamata, Italian-style black and green, 'mini Kalamata,' and Ligurian. Delicious tapenades are also available. Birregurra Estate Olives also produce first cold pressed, Extra-Virgin Olive Oil, which has the clean, grassy aroma and flavour only this kind of oil can have. Nestled in the stunning Otway Ranges of South Victoria, come celebrate what Gosling Creek Wines have to offer. Gosling Creek flows from the Great Otway National Park through fern gullies and picturesque rolling countryside to the Barwon River. The vineyard is located on the northern slopes, where the maritime influences of Bass Strait make an ideal location for cooler-climate grapes. The Gosling Creek wines range from pinot noir, which was the first set of 2000 vines planted, 10 years ago. Following that there are 2500 Shiraz and 2000 Riesling vines. The cellar door is open on weekends from September to June and everyday in January. Gosling Creek serves light lunches over the warmer months.

Wyuna Park is a boutique vineyard on the Bellarine Peninsula midway between Geelong and Queenscliff. They specialise in hand-picked pinot noir and pinot gris making wines with minimum intervention and traditional methods. South-westerly winds coming off Bass Strait ensure a cool climate and slow ripening of the fruit. Vines were planted in 1998/99 on the grey-black clay-loam soil (pH 6.0). Vines are cane-pruned by hand and the yields are kept low to ensure high quality fruit with complex and intense flavour. Approximately 70% of the fruit is sold to local wineries. The remainder is processed on-site. As a small producer, Wyuna Park can use innovative methods to produce unusual wines of finesse, balance and distinction. The Great Otway National Park stretches from Torquay through to Princetown and up through the Otways hinterland towards Colac. A permit is required for horse riders to ride in the National Park and Parks Victoria staff can assist you with this. The formed roads and tracks provide ideal trails for these active endeavours. The Friends of Geelong Botanic Gardens (FGBG) is a self-funding, voluntary association formed in 1985 to "conserve, protect and enhance the Geelong Botanic Gardens..." FGBG aims to promote community awareness and appreciation of the Geelong Botanic Gardens and support the Gardens as a centre for education, scientific research, horticulture, conservation and recreation. FGBG acts in partnership with Gardens' management to develop and support the GBG and Eastern Park. FGBG provides information, education, interpretation and relevant public programs. A voluntary guiding service interprets the Gardens for the public. Guides are trained to provide a diverse range of Gardens' experiences for individuals and groups. Friends manage and support the development and implementation of programs for primary, secondary, tertiary and community education. Friends manage the FGBG/Botanic Gardens Reference Library. Friends provide a range of publications - a newsletter, information sheets, brochures, flyers etc. Friends encourage and support cultural, artistic, environmental and horticultural events. The Friends Nursery, with a group of Growing Friends, select and propagate plant material for sale, maintain a stock management system, maintain a perennial border and co-operate with the Heritage Rose Group. FGBG manages the Friends Teahouse, providing light refreshments, run by employed staff and volunteers. Founded in 1985 the Friends are a volunteer support group working in partnership with the Geelong Botanic Gardens.
