The events calendar in Geelong is busy and ever-evolving. There are a huge number of sports for participants or spectators, theatre shows, musical events and gourmet experiences. Here are five to pencil in the calendar:
Held on the weekend closest to Australia Day it’s the largest regatta in the Southern Hemisphere. Even for non-yachties, the shoreside program of entertainment, activities, food and fireworks is a great reason to get down to the waterfront.
Geelong keeps building on its reputation as the craft beer capital. Breweries large and small are operating across the city, venues are putting real effort into beer lists and the annual Great Australian Beer Festival are all contributing to this beer bonanza. Held in Feburary, prime beer-drinking weather, there are loads of ales and lagers to try as well as great entertainment and food.
Held at Avalon Airport biennially around February/March, the Airshow brings out your inner 8 year old. Ground displays include defence aircraft with personnel on hand to explain the tech stuff, the newest technologies in aerospace and historic exhibitions. In the sky, there’s a range of super impressive flying displays ranging from vintage aircraft, gliders and acrobatics to simulated war games featuring some of the most advanced fighter jets in the world.
Melbourne Cup weekend at vineyards and wineries across the Geelong region. Each venue puts their own unique spin on it, serving up food and entertainment as well as their fabulous wine. Tickets include a tasting glass for all the venues and there’s a coordinated bus schedule so you don’t need a designated driver! Cheers!
Evolved from the Geelong Speed Trials, the Geelong Revival is an annual showcase of more than 600 vintage cars in a vibrant, festival atmosphere on the Geelong Waterfront. 400 cars and motorbikes will participate in the quarter mile sprint, vintage vehicles, caravans and fashions will be on display and the Friday night cruise will see all manner of classic cars on the streets of Geelong to rev up for the weekend celebration of motorsport.
And after all of that action you'll need a place to rest your head. Take a look here.
