Portarlington – a holiday spot favourite and a local love. Nestled in amongst vineyards, parks and beaches, this seaside town, with uninterrupted bay views, calm waters and a string of boutique shops and eateries is calling out for you and your family to discover its delights. What better way to do this than by getting out, about and a little active with Portarlington’s top five things to do…
A vast stretch of golden sand, gentle lapping waves and shelter aplenty – it is no wonder that Portarlington’s Main Beach has earned the reputation for being a first-rate, family-friendly place to swim and relax. Extending over 1.5 km, Portarlington’s stretch of beach grants easy access, direct from The Esplanade. This means you, your family and everything but the kitchen sink (that we seem to lug to the beach), is super easy to get from car to sand.
Walk your way in, around and through picturesque Portarlington; an activity that won’t pull at the purse strings but will most certainly please the masses, thanks to an outstanding array of walking trails. The ‘Ramblers Walk’ meanders along the foreshore, taking in spectacular panoramic views. The ‘History Walk’ (map obtained from the Visitor Centre) traipses past 22 places of historical significance in Portarlington. A walk on Portarlington’s lengthy pier will not only take you over the crystal waters but it will also allow you to see a bustling harbour at work. And a stroll through the main street will afford you many a boutique shop to browse.
Skate, scooter, BMX at Portarlington’s premier skatepark. Positioned within Portarlington’s foreshore park; WG Little Reserve, the skatepark presents all the fun and fervour of traditional obstacles (ramps, bowl, rails, quarter pipes and runs) with the added bonus of exceptional water views for the spectating parents. WG Little Reserve also offers up a playground, BBQ facilities, picnic areas and toilets.
Ride the rails at Portarlington Bayside Miniature Railway; Geelong’s only 7.25 and 5 inch miniature railway and Australia’s only railway located on a foreshore. This little locomotive departs from a vintage railway station and winds its way around native parkland. The park itself is situated on a spacious eight acres, complete with a children's adventure playground, free under cover BBQs and kiosk facilities, making for a complete family fun day.
Take a leisurely cruise across the bay with Port Phillip Ferries; a stylish and very comfortable 400-passenger catamaran. Departing from the Portarlington Harbour, the ferry will transport you across the waters and into the heart of the city, Victoria Harbour at Docklands. The kids will love taking in the spectacular sights and sounds along the way and the parents will love sitting back and sipping on a bevvie from their licensed onboard café.
