Clever and Creative - Geelong's Culture Club

As Australia’s first (and only) City of Design, Geelong is a member of an incredibly cool collective... (yep, even cooler than joining Boy George's band) Geelong is a member of the UNESCO Creative City Network

From inventing the Ute and pioneering the fridge, to helping Aussies hang out the washing, our history has been filled with Australian and world design firsts.

Design-wise, we have heritage architecture alongside contemporary precincts, and our history as industrial innovators has flowed into today's future-focused Deakin projects and civic innovations.

So, while we celebrate our design heritage, we're highlighting a few clever and creative cultural events.

As if we needed more proof that we're the top town when it comes to all things artistic, The Geelong Gallery is the exclusive Victorian venue hosting The 2018 Archibald Prize. Australia's favourite art prize is awarded to the best portrait of the year, and regularly features a who's who of Aussie cultural icons and celebrities. Open from September 22nd, the exhibition will run until mid-November, so get on down!

Geelong's National Wool Museum hosts a premiere Australian exhibition Masters: Art of the Precious Metal Object. Curated by award winning artists Victoria Edgar and NWM Director Padraic Fisher, it showcases spectacular design, exceptional works and authentic practice from eleven masters of contemporary Australian goldsmithing, silversmithing and enamelling. Experience some of Australia's most exciting works in these unique mediums.

Simultaneously in their second exhibition space, you can experience the incredibly colourful works of Marion Hall Best (1905-1988), one of Australia’s first and most influential independent interior designers. Marion Hall Best: Interiors is a travelling exhibition from Sydney Living Museums and is a must-see for any fans of original furniture, fabrics, furnishings and award-winning design schemes.

Not to be outdone, the city itself will step up and transform into a living art gallery. For a night of music, performance and local culture Geelong will be shining brightly under the cover of darkness. The cultural precinct will be the place to be, as White Night Geelong comes to town.
