Some of the wines synonymous with Geelong and Victorian wine are grown and crafted in the Moorabool Valley. The reputation is growing thanks to a small band of talented winemakers operating in boutique, family-owned wineries.
Clyde Park Vineyard and Bistro produces Pinot Noir, Shiraz, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Rose. Chef and owner Sue Dixon prepares a range of delicious fare including wood fired pizzas, antipasto tasting plates and hearty mains. Guests can dine outside and take in sweeping views of the surrounding Moorabool Valley or venture inside to the spacious dining hall with wine barrels covering almost every wall.
Nearby,Lethbridge Wines was founded by a team of three scientists. It’s one of Australia’s most environmentally sustainable vineyards, employing innovative organic and biodynamic methods to produce distinct wine. Here guests can enjoy a platter of local Meredith Dairy cheese with a glass of wine at the cellar door.
Moorabool Ridge Vineyard, perched on the edge of the Moorabool River, offers stunning views of the water and surrounding hills. Tastings are available in the small shepherd’s cottage built in the 1850s where they can sample the Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Semillon and Shiraz. Moorabool Ridge Vineyard is also a great spot to stock up on gourmet goodies, with a selection of local jams, pickles, relishes and olive oils available.
At Sutherlands Creek in the heart of the Moorabool Valley is Austins & Co, where Richard and Pam Austin, along with their son Scott, have been producing world-class Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, Shiraz, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc for more than thirty years. The cellar door is open by appointment and well worth a visit to pick up a bottle or two to take home.
A short drive from Sutherlands Creek is the township of Anakie, which is home to del Rios Cellar Door and Café. Three generations of the del Rios family from Spain have tended the vineyard, planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Marsanne. On weekends the café serves up delicious paella, traditional tapas and cheese platters with sweeping views of the You Yangs and Geelong.
