Winter school holidays – the snuggle is real!
While the temperature has dropped, kids energy and enthusiasm certainly hasn’t - and parents are on the hunt for things to do in these chillier times with their children. So we've whipped up a bag of activities for the upcoming school holidays.
The Deets – At Market Square (centre court), Geelong. Monday 1st July to Friday 5th July, 10am to 2pm. Age suitability, 2-12.
This festival is offering a complete merma-fication! Daily mermaid and pirate shows, up-cycled telescope creation, reinvention of yourself as a mermaid/merman (complete with a SHELLfie for proof) and the magical creation of your own pet jellyfish! This festival mer-makes for a great way to pass some time while you're in town.
The Deets – At the Geelong Gallery. Monday 8th July, 10.15am to 10.45am. Age suitability 3-5.
Rocket to the moon and explore the wonders of it through art. See how artists, over time have represented the moon in stories and art.
The Deets – At the Geelong Gallery. Tuesday 9th July, 10.15am to 11.15am. Age suitability 6-10.
This moon exploration is geared toward the slightly older children.
The Deets – At Werribee Park Mansion. Saturday 29th June, Saturday 6th and Saturday 13th July, 8pm to 9.30pm. Suitable for children aged 11+.
Meet inside the foyer of the opulent Mansion Hotel to begin your journey into a roaming play that artfully combines history, comedy and the all-important scare factor.
The Deets – At Queenscliff Harbour. Friday 28th June to Sunday 14th July. 10am to 7pm Sunday to Thursday. 10am to 9pm Friday and Saturday. All ages.
Queenscliff Harbour is transforming into a Winter Wonderland. Over the school holidays an incredible ice-skating rink and thrilling toboggan run will be housed in a magnificent marquee at the Harbour. Go on, get your skates on!
The Deets – At Portarlington Bayside Miniature Railway. Wednesday 3rd July and Wednesday 10th July, 11am to 3pm. All ages.
Choo-choo-chugging along these winter school holidays is the much loved Portarlington Miniature Railway. Board your carriage and take to the rails around the lush parklands. Along with the train, the eight-hectare reserve also features ample running room and an adventure playground.
The Deets – At the Geelong Gallery. Thursday 11th July, 10am to 3pm. Age suitability 10-14.
Draw inspiration for the fantastical Georges Méliès’ Le voyage dans la Lune (A trip to the Moon, 1902). This day workshop will allow your kids to experience Claymation from beginning to end; script and character creation, generating sets and props using plasticine and other materials, then bringing it to life (frame by frame). Everyone gets a downloadable link to their finished masterpiece.

Test your little warrior’s agility at Supatramp’s Ninja Warrior Course. Slanted steps, ladder bridge, cargo tube, trapeze, wall run, monkey bars, hanging doors – all the thrills and spills of Ninja Warrior are waiting be tried and tested (safely) by your kids.
The Deets – At Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre, from Monday 1st July to Friday 13th July. Monday 8th July to Friday 12th July. Weekdays only, 10am to 2pm. Suitable for children up to 12 years of age.
Rubble on the double! Nickelodeon and their much-loved characters take over Waurn Ponds Shopping Centre these school holidays. There is tons of fun to be had with the PAW Patrol Scooter Safety Track, mini movie game zone, gadget machine touch screen, Shimmer & Shine Glamour Zone, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles statue display, Nickelodeon character photo opportunity AND Nickelodeon collectible badge making! A fun and interactive workshop learning all about Port Phillips unique dolphins and other amazing marine life, including seals & whales! Play games, see dolphin skulls and meet Bella Burrunan the dolphin.

The Marine and Freshwater Discovery Centre will continue to have its doors open during the winter school holidays, allowing you immerse yourself in the captivating world of water. They will also be delving into the deep with an array of scheduled school holiday activities including family fishing, ocean art and beachcombing.

Southern Port Phillip Bay in winter is an incredible place. Fewer vessels on the water result in peaked animal interest and interactions. From Australian Fur Seals to Burrunan Dolphins to Humpback Whales to Southern Right Whales. These creatures of the bay love to make an appearance when you cruise with Sea All Dolphin Swims during winter.
The Deets – At the Bellarine Railway. Tuesday 9th July, 10.45am to 1pm.
Dazzling Dan boards Bellarine Railway these school holidays for a spectacularly magical experience – a marine themed magic workshop, perfectly positioned as you travel along the bay. Bellarine Railway will also be running their much-loved scenic Winter trips throughout the school holidays.
The Deets – At Werribee Open Range Zoo. Saturday 6th July to Saturday 13th July, 5.30pm to 8.30pm. Suitable for all ages.
For eight nights only, Werribee Open Range Zoo are opening their gates and lighting it up for Wild Nights; an opportunity for you to discover the zoo after dark. See what the animals get up to when the sun goes down, toast marshmallows by the campfire, play in the Glow Zone, watch dazzling fire performers and refuel with mulled wine and delicious food. Plus this year, for the first time, see the amazing life-size animatronic dinosaurs at Zoorassic: Dinos After Dark!
Hi ho Silver and away we go these school holidays with Racing Victoria’s school holiday program. Kids will be given the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of riding a horse and equine care. With various other horse-fun activities planned throughout the day, this is definitely something worth jockeying for!

What an absolutely fitting time to launch the Happy Birthday Playschool exhibition at the Wool Museum, the start of the school holidays! This exhibition celebrates 50 years of this iconic ABV TV show and gives everyone (young and old) the opportunity to relive their favourite presenters, toys, windows and so much more! Various activities are scheduled throughout the exhibition’s spell.

Bugs… these little critters are pretty magical especially when it comes to gardens. Discover how Bug Hotels increase beneficial insects in your garden and then make your own Bug Hotel along with joining in on a bug hunt walk and fun and interactive bug story.
