You don't need to go to France to see the incredible spectacle of the world's best cyclists. We've got the inside word on the best spots that'll get you so close to the action you'll feel like you're wearing lycra.
Saturday will see 4,000 locals participate in the People's Ride then the elite women's race. On Sunday the men's race will be another hard-fought spectacle. Here's where to watch:
This is the start and finish point of the race and the Event Village. See riders hustle for position at the beginning and sprint for the line at the end without missing the middle section shown on the big screen. There'll be a festival atmosphere, especially with pre-race introductions and final presentations at Steampacket Gardens after the race has been won. This is also base camp for teams and sponsors, a great spot to wander, sticky-beak and maybe pick up some merchandise. The Event Village and Steampacket Gardens is open both Saturday and Sunday.
Cycling action + excellent eating and drinking options nearby + Australia Day sales in local shops all weekend = winning! See the cyclists as they pass through Cadel's home town and catch all the action on the big screen on Sunday. Plus you get that relaxed Barwon Heads beach holiday vibe.
MONTPELLIER PARK, HIGHTON
The Subaru King of the Mountain precinct will see agony on the faces of the best riders in the world as they tackle the steep climb - three times over! There are also giveaways, pre-event entertainment and a big screen in the park to catch all the action from the entire race. Open Sunday from 12pm.
It's sure to be another exciting event weekend in Geelong and The Bellarine. For more information about the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road race head to the event website: www.cadelevansgreatoceanroadrace.com.au
