End of an Era - The Last Gippsland Lakes Fishermen
A photographic exhibition of the Gippsland Lakes commercial fishery in their final year of operation. Launch, 6th May, running until the 25th May, Monday to Friday 10am-4pm.
Australian commercial fishing is historically small scale. In 2020, the second last bay and estuarine fishery in Victoria was closed. Photographs and oral histories captured by renowned artists prior to the fishery’s closure, as well as artifacts gathered over generations, offer a rarely seen insight into the lives of fishing families, their stories and their connection to the land and sea.
This community-driven project has benefited from the generous support of the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation, Deakin University, the National Library of Australia, the University of Melbourne and the City of Melbourne.
Photographs by Leigh Henningham, Donna Squire and Geoff Stanton.
Oral Histories by Nikki Henningham.
Exhibition to be launched by Barbara Konstas, CEO Melbourne Seafood Centre.
