There’s something satisfying about stepping off the ferry in Portarlington after a smooth ride across the bay from Melbourne. Maybe it’s the sea breeze, maybe it’s the change of pace, or maybe it’s just knowing you’ve skipped the traffic.

Travelling on Port Phillip Ferries is one of the easiest ways to explore The Bellarine. The ferry departs daily from Docklands and drops you right at the waterfront in Portarlington (or Geelong on the weekend). No car required. Just grab a coffee onboard, find a comfy spot by the window, and take in the views.

Once you’re off the ferry, the adventure starts immediately. You can head into Geelong for the Archibald Prize or stay local and spend the day eating, sipping and wandering your way around Portarlington. Either way, there’s a heap to get stuck into once you arrive. And the best bit is, most of it’s already planned for you. Just book it in and show up.

Make a Day of It

Once you arrive, the options are endless. If you’re heading to Portarlington, there are lunch packages that include your return ferry, local transfers, and a two-course meal with a drink at Portarlington Golf Club. It's great value and super easy for anyone organising a social group, club outing or catch-up with mates.

Weekend Geelong arrivals can dive straight into the city centre. It’s a short walk from the ferry to cafes, galleries, laneways, and waterfront walks. Just bring your appetite and a sense of curiosity.

Art Lovers, Take Note

The Archibald Prize 2025 is heading to Geelong Gallery from 30 August to 9 November. It’s the only Victorian stop on the regional tour, and Port Phillip Ferries is teaming up with the Gallery for some great-value packages. This year, you can even choose a one-way ferry ticket and return by train if you want to hang around longer.

It’s the perfect excuse to see incredible Australian portraits, wander the city, grab a bite, and make a proper day of it.
