A hidden gem and makers mecca

Perched above the Barwon River is the Fyansford Paper Mill where you’ll discover a community of artists as you wander in and out of studios tucked away on the cliff-edge near Buckley Falls.

The site was a mill until 1923 but now, the scattering of bluestone and brick buildings house Elizabeth Bell Ceramics and Provenance Wines – a cellar door and restaurant with stunning cathedral ceilings and mural by street artist RONE.

There are also shops selling furniture, homewares and handmade jewellery as well as a gallery and café.

It’s hard to believe this piece of picturesque countryside is only a 9-minute drive from the city.

Buckley Falls

Buckley Falls is located upstream from where the Barwon and Moorabool rivers connect. It’s a popular spot for photographers and an area of environmental, historical and cultural significance for the Wadawurrung People – who lived in and cared for this region for tens of thousands of years.

Several circuits and trails along the Barwon and Moorabool rivers link up to Buckley Falls, making it the perfect spot for biking, running, walking, and even roller skating—you name it!

Rich in history

When it was completed in 1878, the Fyansford Paper Mill was one of the most advanced paper mills in the Southern Hemisphere.

While it has since been reimagined, it still houses the original mill buildings, manager’s house, and the water race and impeller tower, which were used to power the site. It was operational right up until 1923 before becoming the creative precinct it is today.
