Slip into coastal feels

Barwon Heads feels a world away thanks to its sandy shores, rugged coastline, thriving marine life and a cosmopolitan heart.

Locals and visitors love the laidback coastal vibes here, where days are spent between the beach and a restaurant, on repeat.

It’s on the eastern side of the peninsula, a 22-minute drive from Geelong or 90 minutes from Melbourne.

Nature aplenty

The Barwon Bluff Marine Sanctuary wraps around Barwon Heads, protecting 17 hectares of reef and marine life. Rockpools around the Barwon Bluff are exposed at low tide, making them the perfect base for rambling, searching for sea critters, and more adventurous beach strolls.

From up above, the cliff walk around the Bluff provides a scenic view overlooking Thirteenth Beach, Bass Strait, the river and back towards the township. Barwon Bluff is also one of the best places in the region to spot passing whales from June to October.

In the water

Swim in the vast and picturesque river estuary or along the sandy river foreshore at the mouth of the Barwon River. Watch your step though, ankle-deep can become hip-deep in a flash.

When the current is right, a stand-up paddleboarding is a great way to slowly see the sights. For the more adventurous, head around the corner to Thirteenth Beach where experienced surfers can dial up the adrenaline.
