Travellers flying into Melbourne might pass through Tullamarine, but the lucky ones will actually land southwest of the city, at Avalon Airport. Established in 1997, and offering regular Jetstar flights, Avalon is a faster, more convenient way to enter Victoria. Less queues, less crowds, less hassle.
Not only is Avalon home to the world-famous Australian International Air Show, but it’s surrounded by some of the best-kept secrets in Victoria. In fact, you don’t need to venture more than 35 minutes from the airport to sample some of the best nature, food and wine in the state.
Here are some of our favourite spots near Avalon Airport.
The granite silhouette of the You Yangs (Wurdi Youang) is a familiar sight for all those living west of Melbourne. They’re the highest peaks in the region, and (with more than 50km of trails to explore) one of the best mountain-biking destinations in Victoria. But you don’t need a set of wheels to enjoy the You Yangs. Just pull into Turntable Carpark and hike the Flinders Peak track – it’s a one-hour return trip to the summit.

Just 26 minutes from the Airport, you’ll find something unexpected in the Anakie bush: a faithfully recreated medieval castle, which took over 60 years to create. Welcome to Fairy Park! Dedicated to myths, legends and fairy tales, Fairy Park features 32 different scenes to explore, not to mention the Hungry Knights Eatery, and a Camelot Playground for the kids. Great family fun.

If you’re looking for the best bushwalking near Geelong, Brisbane Ranges National Park is your ticket. Located just 39 minutes from Avalon Airport, this is one of Victoria’s richest wildflower habitats, with 31 hiking and walking trails to explore. Pick your campground, pitch a tent, and tackle the legendary three-day Burchell Trail. It’s a great intro to Wadawurrung Country. July through November is usually a good time to visit.
Be sure to check Parks Victoria or Vic Emergency for any warnings and safety messages in the area.

Set amongst 620 pristine acres of grassy woodlands and volcanic plains, Serendip Sanctuary is one of a few wildlife reserves in the region. Home to more than 150 bird species, including Whistling Kites, Yellow-billed Spoonbills and the elusive Tawny Frogmouth, it’s also a great place to spot emus and Eastern Grey Kangaroos. Did we mention it’s just 8 minutes down the road from Avalon? Check out the website for the latest walking tours.
The Moorabool Valley is one of Victoria’s most famous cool-climate wine regions, and you could happily spend a few days here, driving from cellar door to cellar door, staying at quaint B&Bs. Our favourite spots include Austin’s Wines and Clyde Park Vineyard, but make sure you stop by Moorabool Valley Chocolate for a sweet treat before you go. Owner Lynne Meek does the best boutique chocolates in the Valley.

The Kevin Hoffman Walk is an award-winning native garden walking trail in Lara, just 10 minutes from Avalon Airport. It’s a great first stop if you’re new in town. Running between Station Lake Road and Flinders Avenue, the garden meanders along the eastern banks of Hovells Creek, covering nearly a kilometre of tranquil gardens and diverse flora. Definitely one for the green thumbs.

Smack bang between Geelong and Ballarat, you’ll find the charming little ghost town of Steiglitz. Once a thriving Gold Rush hub, it’s now known mostly for the Steiglitz Historic Park, a sprawling mountain range covered in wildflower meadows and rocky gulleys, and criss-crossed with hiking tracks. This is the perfect spot for bushwalks, picnics and optimistic gold prospecting (hey, you never know your luck).
