Winter is a great time to get out with the kids in Geelong and The Bellarine. The beaches are quieter, the playgrounds have room to move and the cooler days bring light trails, train rides, indoor play, footy and plenty of good lunch stops.

Around an hour from Melbourne, it works for a winter day trip or a few nights by the coast.

Winter events after dark

Winter brings some of the region’s biggest family events.

Adventure Park’s Winter Glow adds snow play, lights and rides after dark, while Eclipse: In Bloom lights up Geelong Botanic Gardens. Over in Queenscliff, Steamlight Nights combines a heritage train ride with glowing installations and fire pits.

These events run on selected dates, so it is worth checking sessions before you leave home.

Indoor activities for rainy days

A wet forecast does not have to derail the day.

Younger kids can get busy at MoPA Geelong, while BOUNCEinc, Laserquest and The Rock Adventure Centre are good options for kids who need to move.

At the National Wool Museum, On The Move puts kids inside an interactive world of transport. They can make a paper plane, build a vehicle of the future and learn how people and goods move through cities.

Playgrounds and fresh air

Clear winter days are good for getting outside.

Try W.G. Little Reserve in Portarlington, Frank Ellis Reserve in Barwon Heads or Kingston Park in Ocean Grove. In Geelong, Eastern Beach Reserve gives you a playground, open grass and the waterfront path all in one spot.

Rippleside Park is another good option, with a new inclusive PlaySpace designed for children of all abilities. The foreshore park also has accessible picnic and barbecue facilities, beach access, open lawns and views across Corio Bay.

For kids and teens who want something more active, Next Level Skirmish in Bell Park runs outdoor laser tag across a purpose-built battlefield. It is pain-free, screen-free and gives everyone plenty of room to run, hide and work as a team.

Add hot chips, a bakery stop or a walk by the water and you have most of the day sorted.

Family-friendly places to eat

The region has plenty of places where lunch with kids feels manageable.

Little Creatures Brewery, Barwon Edge, Wharf Shed, The Eureka Hotel and MexiCam’s are handy around Geelong. On The Bellarine, try Flying Brick Cider House, FarmDog Brewing or The Esplanade Hotel Queenscliff.

Many have kids menus, play spaces or room to move, which always helps.

Hit the rails

For locomotive kids, there are two train-related activities on The Bellarine. The first is the Bellarine Railway – a volunteer-operated steam train that chugs between Queenscliff and Drysdale most Sundays.

The other great attraction is the Portarlington Bayside Miniature Railway; perfect for kids and grown-up kids alike. This one operates on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month, plus Wednesdays during the school holidays.

Footy, golf and bigger kids

Older kids and teenagers can be harder to impress, but there are a few reliable options.

Catch an AFL game at GMHBA Stadium, book a bay at The Range at Curlewis or try mini golf at Bellarine Adventure Golf.

Coastal walks and whale watching

Winter is one of the best times to see the coast without the summer crowds.

Walk around The Bluff in Barwon Heads, head to Point Lonsdale or scan the water from Queenscliff for passing whales.

You can also take the kids to the You Yangs for a short walk, a picnic or the climb up Flinders Peak if they have the energy.

Stay a little longer

A winter stay gives you more time for evening events, relaxed mornings and a few stops along the coast.

At selected Barwon Coast caravan parks, winter also brings dog-friendly stays and the chance to sit around a campfire, which gives the season its own appeal.

You can also stay in central Geelong, book a holiday park on The Bellarine or find a coastal holiday house with room for the whole crew.
